WEAR Website Update Survey

WEAR is planning to combine all survey access features into the WEAR website at www.bodysizeshape.com.

WEAR charges for access to survey data solely for the purpose of maintaining the data, maintaining the WEAR website and distributing the data. Because we want to continue to maintain the data and allow access to people who can't afford a full membership we are considering some data access alternatives and we want to know what you would find useful as a WEAR member.

WEAR does not yet have a method for allowing users to download 3D scans, so we distribute this data on USB drives which incurs additional costs. Any 3D scans made accessible on the WEAR website would only be samples as part of free access data.

Please help us to understand what you would find useful as a WEAR member by completing this quick 7 question survey.

Which types of WEAR memberships would interest you?

About the workshop: Many technology advances have been made since the 2004 publication of the HFES 300 Committee’s "Guidelines for Using Anthropometric Data in Product Design". For example, we now have 3D printing for rapid prototyping, inexpensive 3D scanning for fit visualization, and virtual or augmented reality for experiencing product concepts. These advances have enabled the use of anthropometric methods in product development that were previously too time consuming or expensive. This workshop will present up-to-date best practices and cover the product development process from the first statistical models to the final product using recent examples and success stories from the wearable product and apparel industries. It will be presented in five parts corresponding to the design loop of the Systems Engineering (SE) Process: 1) introduction to anthropometry, cases, fit and SE, 2) statistics for anthropometry, identification of cases and prototype development, 3) human modeling, CAD and prototyping, 4) fit mapping with hands-on fit assessment, and 5) statistics for cost/benefit analysis and size selection. Data analysis will be done during the workshop, and an Excel™ data file with 58 anthropometric and demographic variables on 2379 North American subjects will be provided to all attendees. SPSS™ and Excel™ software will be used in the course and some SPSS code files will be provided in text form for students to use after the workshop. Attendees will also receive an electronic copy of the HFES’ guidelines book. Fit mapping of a glove will be done during the workshop and attendees will be provided with a copy of the fit data as well as the data collection forms used. Participants will want to bring a laptop computer preferably with Microsoft Office™, particularly Excel™ for the best experience. Experienced designers, engineers, and human factors professionals will get the most out of the workshop.

Brisbane will host the International Open Repositories Conference 26-30 June 2017

The University of Queensland (UQ), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Griffith University welcomed today’s announcement that Brisbane will host the International Open Repositories Conference 26-30 June 2017 <http://or2017.net/> at the Hilton Brisbane.

The annual Open Repositories Conference brings together users and developers of open digital repository platforms from higher education, government, galleries, libraries, archives and museums. The Conference provides an interactive forum for delegates from around the world to come together and explore the global challenges and opportunities facing libraries and the broader scholarly information landscape.

“There has never been a more exciting time for Australia to host this Conference as the issues around scholarly information, such as publishing and open access, directly play into Australia’s National Innovation and Science Agenda. Australia’s researchers and scholars are producing phenomenal work yet most of this isn’t being realised as commercial success due to systemic barriers, such as how research data is stored and accessed”, said Linda O’Brien, Pro Vice Chancellor, Information Services at Griffith University in response to the news of the successful bid.

Ms O’Brien continued. “This announcement confirms what we already know - Australian universities are amongst the most innovative around the world and that Brisbane is a world-class conference destination.”

Open Repositories 2017 will attract around 400 delegates and bring an estimated $1 million to the Queensland economy.

Dr. Simon Hodson, Executive Director, CODATA: simon@codata.org

Ms. LI Chang, CODATA-China Secretariat: lichang@cnic.cn

Workshop Objectives

In today’s data-rich world, streams of digital data are being generated from science facilities and myriad sensors (telescopes, video cameras, traffic monitors, magnetic resonance imaging machines, and biological and chemical sensors monitoring the environment etc). Combined with the increasing ability for large-scale storage, communication and analysis, the Data Revolution presents major opportunities for science. The Science International Accord on ‘Open Data in a Big Data World’ http://www.icsu.org/science-international/accord highlights the most important issues to be addressed if these benefits are to be realized. These include the Open Data imperative, the need to maintain the scientific self-correction and the ethical constraints which must be respected. Equally important is the need for open global participation in the benefits of the Data Revolution. Systemic capacity building and targeted training in Big Data and data science are essential if this is to be achieved in countries with emerging or developing economies.

Building data science capacity in countries with developing and emerging economies (in part through promoting technical training in data science, in data management and in the implications of Big Data for science) is an important part of CODATA’s strategy.

The training program offered aims to engage participants with a number of facets of data science and data management in the Big Data age. Topics include, but are not limited to, interdisciplinary applications of open research data, data intensive research, data management policies, cloud computing, visualization, analytics and data infrastructure development in the Big Data Age. Through a mix of theoretical study, workshop and practical sessions as well as field visits, the organizers aim to help participants develop a deeper expertise in the latest Big Data technologies for scientific discovery.

The CODATA International Training Workshop in Big Data for Science shares the objectives and much of the content of the CODATA-RDA Research Data Science Summer Schools http://www.codata.org/working-groups/research-data-science-summer-schools and is partnering with that initiative. Applications are invited from:

early career researchers with an interest in data science, and

research leaders and managers of research organisations who are interested in putting on a similar short course at their home institution or with partners in their country.

A number of activities will be organized involving elite Chinese scientists, in order to promote knowledge sharing and to develop opportunities for future exchanges and collaboration. Participants will benefit also from visits to a number of leading research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). In these visits, participants will have the opportunity to learn from the scientific approach, management expertise, knowledge development and practical application that characterize activities at CAS institutes working at the frontiers of research. Furthermore, the program will promote interaction and exchange of knowledge between experts and participants and among participants who will benefit greatly from exchanges with colleagues for a variety of academic and national backgrounds.

Applications Now Open for CODATA-RDA School of Research Data Science

Applications are now open for the CODATA-RDA School of Research Data Science

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics https://www.ictp.it/, in collaboration with CODATA http://www.codata.org/, RDA https://rd-alliance.org/node and TWAS http://twas.org/, is organising a short course in the data science approaches and skills that are essential for 21st century research. The CODATA-RDA Research Data Science Summer School will be held at the ICTP, Trieste, Italy from 1st to 12th August 2016.

The ever-accelerating volume and variety of data being generated is having a huge impact on a wide variety of research disciplines, from the sciences to the humanities. The international, collective ability to create, share and analyse vast quantities of data is having a profound, transformative effect. This 'Data Revolution' offers great opportunities for students with modern data skills, both in conducting their research and in entering a jobs market where those skills are in demand.

Contemporary research – particularly when addressing the most significant, transdisciplinary research challenges – cannot be done effectively without a range of skills relating to data. This includes the principles and practice of Open Science and research data management and curation, the use of a range of data platforms and infrastructures, large scale analysis, statistics, visualisation and modelling techniques, software development and annotation and more. We define ‘Research Data Science’ as the ensemble of these skills.
The Dimensional Divide by Karen Bredenkamp

One of our WEAR founding members, Karen Bredenkamp (ERGOnomics TECHnologies, South Africa) has written an interesting piece on "The Dimensional Divide":

I am of the opinion that an ‘oversized’ gap exists between scientific analysis of anthropometric data and anthropometric inputs used for apparel and product design. So, where does the problem lie? Is it with the training courses for designers? Do they not have enough (if any) exposure to all types of (traditional and three dimensional (form)) anthropometric data or the software used for analysis thereof?

If designers do not get the required exposure, why is this? The question of availability of anthropometric databases comes to mind. In most cases, the anthropometric data that is available freely to the public, including students, are small datasets and more often processed data such as minimum, maximum, average and some percentile data. The range of variables might not be extensive enough to include all dimensions required by the designers. Therefore, they are forced to do the unthinkable: add and subtract percentile data to derive variables not
included in the original dataset. Some insightful teachers and professors might warn the designers of the future, of the risks involved in deriving variables in this way. But with the lack of other data, what are the students left to do? Another issue is the unavailability of population specific data. As a result, designers resort to using whatever data they can find… because we are all human and humans look “similar”.

For some disciplines, this assumption of similarity might be sufficient, but within the science of anthropometry this assumption is detrimental! As a result of the unavailability of RAW, population specific, and especially three-dimensional form anthropometric data, there is limited to no exposure to the development of analysis know-how, specialised methodologies and software tools by which to analyse body form and size data for implementation in design.

So, why is anthropometric data not freely available? I like the statement made by Wilson et al. (2014) “Data management and stewardship problems continue to be addressed piecemeal. Each organisation responds to its own needs with its own data standards and policies”. Funding an anthropometric survey is costly. Especially a well thought through survey which includes all the ‘cheques and balances’ to ensure high levels of data accuracy. In today’s cut-throat, cashstrapped times, organisations which can see their way through spending their money on such a survey, want to see some form of return on investment! Normally, this could be in the form of a product which will sell to make LOTS of money. This product will have competitor’s edge since it was based on access to data that ‘noone else has’. This edge ends up being a double edged sword because now we end up right where we started: anthropometric data for designers who don’t have the required know-how, procedures or tools to analyse.

Then we get to the question of “Is it really fair to expect designers to be experts on anthropometry?” Designers find themselves preoccupied with development and design aspects, such as latest material technologies, design tools and software, design rules and principles to mention a few.

On the other hand, the scientists specializing in anthropometry normally have a scientific background in anthropology, anthropometry or other related disciplines. This knowledge together with the knowledge of the potential added benefit of raw, population specific anthropometric data, is used to motivate for population specific surveys with appropriate decision makers and funders. Normally, such funding institutions also make funding available for research which could include exposure to analysis methodologies and software tool development. So now, the data can be analysed, extracted, compared and studied. Unfortunately, because they are scientists and not designers, this is normally where it stops. Or, the processed data is handed over to designers. In the event that there is a close working relationship and shared goals between the anthropometry specialists and the designers (normally because they work for the same organisation and they have shared goals and interests) it might be possible to get to an end product which incorporates all that
the latest anthropometric data and analysis tools have to offer. However, in most cases, the anthropometry specialists and the designers speak two different languages and have isolated expectations, work pressures and deliverable priorities.

Either, the anthropometry specialists cannot provide the anthropometric inputs in a format that the designer can use, or the designers do not have the know-how of how to design from anthropometric data ‘from scratch’. Designers might have become so accustomed to design using design guidelines (typically taught during their design course) based on long forgotten, processed anthropometric data (I can assume that it most probably was not population specific). So, all the advantages of advancements in anthropometric data quality and analysis tools are lost.

So, what is needed to bridge this gap? An industry that is keen to evolve and embrace everything that new technologies and advances in the field of 3D anthropometry has to offer! A closer working relationship, tolerance and willingness to share and learn attitude between anthropometry specialists, apparel and design training institutions and industry designers. And finally, but most importantly, funding sources that are willing to spend money on POPULATION SPECIFIC anthropometric surveys (focused on ensuring high levels of data accuracy) and make data freely
available to industry!

Mismatch in schoolfurniture in Chile

sizes of school furniture

Abstract

The mismatch between students and school furniture is likely to result in a number of negative effects, such as uncomfortable body posture, pain, and ultimately, it may also affect the learning process. This study's main aim is to review the literature describing the criteria equations for defining the mismatch between students and school furniture, to apply these equations to a specific sample and, based on the results, to propose a methodology to evaluate school furniture suitability. The literature review comprises one publications database, which was used to identify the studies carried out in the field of the abovementioned mismatch. The sample used for testing the different equations was composed of 2261 volunteer subjects from 14 schools. Fifteen studies were found to meet the criteria of this review and 21 equations to test 6 furniture dimensions were identified. Regarding seat height, there are considerable differences between the two most frequently used equations. Although seat to desk clearance was evaluated by knee height, this condition seems to be based on the false assumption that students are sitting on a chair with a proper seat height. Finally, the proposed methodology for suitability evaluation of school furniture should allow for a more reliable analysis of school furniture.

Publication of a report outlining the method for planning a sizng survey

A series of new reports has been published on 20 December 2013 by Safe Work Australia.

These reports focus on the evidence and method for developing and conducting a Body Sizing Survey that for the first time which includes Fit Mapping as part of the data collection. Fit mapping is the relationship between anthropometry and fit metrics. Fit metrics is the measurement of fit (apparel/PPE and environment).

This is needed because there is currently no underlying principles that translate body measurements into products that fit.

This is intended as a template for any country to develop and use.

Anthropometric surveys undertaken in other countries have helped improve work health and safety, increase productivity and reduce inefficiency. But this is the first one to focus on principles of fit.

This report builds on the 2009 Australian Safety and Compensation Council report “Sizing Up Australia: How contemporary is the anthropometric data Australian designers use?’ which found Australia needs a body sizing survey.

For the reports see:

http://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/sites/swa/about/publications/pages/sizing-up-australia
There are a few websites the publish aircraft seat dimensions but that isn't enough to really capture the discomfort for my body type. The shape of the seat pan and back are factors, the cushioning, the angle of the back etc. What do you think about publishing individual reviews of different aircraft & flights like we do for items we buy on the internet? When I see a review of a garment I am considering purchasing I like to know if the reviewer is like me or not so I love it when they describe themselves. Some companies have a checklist where the reviewer identifies age, size, and personal preferences. We could create an website with links to flights and even seats on flights with reviews like that. Maybe we could make it profitable to improve the seats that way. Thoughts?
